HOPE and Service Ministries

The “HOPE” in the name is an acronym for the ministries that make up the cluster

H

Is for “Hospitality” reflecting the mission of the Host/ Hostess Ministry, Kitchen Committee: and all Usher Ministries

O

Is for “Outreach” which highlights key mission objectives of the Fitness/ Wellness Ministry, Deaf Ministry and some Missionary Ministry functions

P

Is for “Prayer”, which is the mission and at the core of the Intercessory Prayer Ministry

E

Is for Evangelism, which is a key aspect of the Missionary Ministry mission
The Service Ministries are: Nurses Unit and Heavenly Hands Ministries, both of whom have a mission to provide service to the congregation.

2009 Hope/Service Goals
  • Continue to strengthen the role of the Usher’s Council
  • Standardize all ushering procedures
  • Collaborate with Trustees on strengthening emergency procedures for the congregation (i.e. CPR and First Aid Training, establishing protocols, roles and responsibilities
  • Enhance the outreach ministry of the Missionaries through partnership within the church and the community
  • Seek ways to enhance the Deaf Ministry
  • Continue to recruit for all ministries within the cluster
  • Host health seminars/ workshops for the church and the surrounding community
  • Deaf Ministry will hold Signing course for those interested in learning ASL, participants will join the Deaf Ministry in providing interpretation of Church services and ministry activities (Million Pound Weight Loss Challenge)
  • Encourage participation in community sponsored events that promotes health and wellness (i.e. Avon Walk, Breast Cancer Walk, Walk for the Homeless, Million Pound Weight Loss Challenge; Rita Allen Walk-a- thon)
  • Continue to seek collaborative programs with other ministries of the church
  • Missionary seek to adopt a nursing home and restore relationship with homeless shelter
  • Those ministries that have not changed their names in 2008 will continue to pray and seek a name that better reflects their ministry from a Biblical / Theological perspective
  • Each ministry will continue to monitor and manage their budget in a responsible manner

    2008 Hope/Service Accomplishments
    • Four usher ministries in the cluster underwent a name change
    • Created new ministry of medical first responders to assist members of the congregation that needed emergency attention during service
    • Worked with American Red Cross to provide CPR/First Aid training certification for members of the church first responder team known as Heavenly Hands Ministry
    • Prepared Emergency/ Disaster Supply Kit for distribution to Senior Ministry members
    • Worked with Northern Virginia Urban League’s Resource Mother’s Program with needed supplies
    • Conducted a towels and warm blanket drive for the ASPAN homeless shelter. More than 280 blankets donated by MOBC congregation.
    • Conducted a Breast Cancer Awareness campaign
    • Coordinated and served breakfasts in between services as well as provide support for all church events i.e. (Church Anniversary, Pastor’s Anniversary, Homecoming Cook out, and Wedding Receptions)
    • Centralized and provide coordination for the distribution of flatware, paper products, and etc for all church events
    • Cards sent to sick and shut in members as well as those in hospitals and nursing home monthly
    • Partnered with other ministries of the church on Annual School Drive and Angel Tree Project
    • Collected eye glasses for local Lions Club
    • Provided training and tips on ways to maintain healthy nutritional habits and physical fitness
    • Provided signing for second services for those members and visitors who were deaf of were hard of hearing and knew sign language
    • Recruited and trained new members in each ministry
